Selection Process:

Individuality and personality come into play as well.  It is possible to have a dog breed which is known to be good with children yet one particular dog from that breed may be vicious. Even if it’s not that extreme, the dog may simply not care for children and their exuberance and avoid them. Generally speaking, reviewing the various breeds is an important first step. It would be a mistake to think it ends there and not assess the dog’s personality thinking, “well we thought that this breed would be best with a child.”

Common Sense:

It is wise to use common sense and not to get a dog that was bred for centuries to be a fighting animal and is still known for its fierceness and aggression.  It is possible to meet a litter of pups from such a breed and to find that one of the pups strikes you as the sweetest, gentlest creature on earth.  This dog may very well remain sweet and loving for its entire life.  But the chances that it could turn fiercely aggressive if it is teased or bothered are higher than if it had been bred as a toy breed.  It would not be a very wise move to get such a breed as it is not the best dog for kids.
