A Bull Terrier can be the Perfect Family Pet.
Bull Terriers:
The Bull Terrier is one of the working class breeds. It is properly called the Staffordshire Bull Terrier and sometimes referred to as the Stafford or Staff for short. It is not to be mistaken with the American Pitbull Terrier which is a different breed and often called the PitBull.
Physical Attributes:
Bull Terriers are short and stocky in stature. Although they are short they can weigh up to 70 pounds. They are very muscular dogs and because of their shape and size they have an unusual walk. The walk is sometimes described as jolly. Their coloring is usually white mixed with another color, often brown. They carry their tail horizontally. The two most common ailments afflicting this breed are deafness and skin disease. They are prone to skin problems therefore they need to be groomed regularly to check for signs of dryness, irritation and skin lesions. They can be checked for deafness while they are still young pups because if they are unlucky enough to suffer from the hearing problems associated with this breed, it will stem right from birth. Another attribute to this breed is its tendency to overeat and to become overweight. Therefore it is better to feed the Bull Terrier small meals at regular intervals and not let it free feed.
The Personality of the Bull Terrier:
The Bull Terrier has loads of charm and personality. They can be quite affectionate and need a lot of attention. They are not likely to make the first move to bond with their owner. Yet once they have bonded they love to be together. They enjoy being around humans and do not like being left alone. If left alone for too long a period, they can become mischievous and chew on objects and tear things apart. They are a strong breed and need a lot of physical exercise. They prefer to be active but will be content to lie around indoors if there is human company.
Keeping Your Bull Terrier Active:
This is not a breed of dog that one should allow to become bored. They waste no time in showing that they were bored when left alone by leaving torn bits of objects everywhere. They have a lot of energy which can be channeled doing productive things like running or playing. For example, this breed of dog could be a good choice of breed for a jogger. On the other hand, if they are not given the room or opportunity to be active they can be prone to Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. They might lick themselves compulsively or become obsessed with chasing their tail.
Issues to Consider:
They are an entertaining and fun animal to own but it is best to monitor them when they are around children. If teased or bothered they could become irritable and mean. They love attention from their owners and can become jealous of children. Also the Bull Terrier is not the easiest dog to train. They can be rather stubborn but with consistency, persistence and patience they can be trained to behave very well. They can be a very rewarding pet to own if they have been allowed to benefit from basic dog obedience training.
