Chinese Crested Dog:
The Chinese Crested Dog is a dog breed that has been recognized by the American Kennel Association in the toy dog class since 1991. The toy class is the smallest class of the 8 classes of dog types. It is similar to and may have descended from the Mexican hairless dog breed which is no longer a recognized breed in the AKA.
Appearance:
The Chinese Crested Dog is usually hairless with hair only on their head, tail and feet. But the Powder Puff dog is another type of the Chinese Crested Dog that does have hair. This dog has a double coat and is known as a Powder Puff Dog. It looks entirely different than the hairless variety but it is the same breed of dog. Both types can be born in the same litter. The Powder Puff is not as common as the hairless variety. Both types have an unusual appearance and this breed has enjoyed fame in the entertainment industry as a result. The long hair on top of their head also gives the Chinese Crested Dog a comical look.
Health Issues:
The most important issue to recognize when looking to buy a Chinese Crested Dog breed is their skin. Their skin resembles human skin and is very sensitive. Without hair or fur to protect them, their skin can get sunburned quite easily. Regular sunscreen for humans can be used on this dog. In fact this breed has very similar skin care needs as humans. They benefit from having their skin kept moisturized and they can develop acne. A light dog coat can protect their skin from the sun in the summer and a warmer coat can keep them warm in the winter. Without dog hair, Chinese Crested Dogs are not as able to withstand cold temperatures as a thick coated breed.
