What is A Cockapoo:

The cockapoo is not a recognized dog breed nor is it a purebred. The Name Cockapoo is what people started using to describe dogs that were half poodle and half cocker spaniel.  The spaniel could be an American Cocker Spaniel or an English Cocker Spaniel.  Some people may even use the term for a dog which is half Springer Spaniel or any of the other Spaniel breeds.  The same goes for the poodle side.  The poodle may have been a miniature poodle which goes up to 15 inches in height or it may be the standard poodle which begins at 15 inches. Even a toy poodle could be bred to a very small spaniel. Some people refer to Cockapoo puppies as cockerpoos or spoodles.

Popularity of the Cockapoo:
There are people who have owned cockapoos and have loved their traits so much that they tried to have it become a recognizable breed.  They began to breed the cocker spaniel / poodle mixed breed to each other hoping to create a new breed.  It is not likely that the American Kennel Club will recognize this mix as a breed anytime soon.  Cockapoo puppies do not have a consistent look.  They may look like a poodle or they may look like a spaniel.  They may even look like a mixed breed where the blending of the two breeds has given them a unique look which resembles neither spaniel nor poodle.  The same goes with personality.  A Cockapoo may have inherited spaniel personality traits such as a keenness for hunting or they may have inherited the poodle’s sharp intelligence and incredible ability to learn many words. Even though the results of a Cockapoo puppy litter can not be as predictable as a purebred dog, they enjoy much popularity among people because this mix can be a very endearing mix.  Many people find that this mutt makes a very cute, easy to handle small sized dog. And there are those who refuse to even call them mutts hence the name Cockapoo.

The Controversy:
While many people love Cockapoos and want to make it an official breed there are opposing viewpoints out there.  Some organizations have been created to promote the Cockapoo being recognized as a breed while others talk about them as though they are already a breed. And then there are those who feel the general public can be misguided into spending pure breed dog prices for a mongrel.  Pet stores are known to put signs saying Cockapoo for a mongrel that looks part poodle or part spaniel. They can do this because it is not a pure breed. They know that some people may be fooled yet they have done nothing illegal. The lineage can not be checked and as a result many mongrels can be passed off as Cockapoos.  They do it because on a banner it sounds better than “mixed breed”, “mongrel” or “mutt”. Most of all the people who are against this Cockapoo phenomena are those who feel the public is being ripped off by the use of misinformation. The best thing for people to do who are shopping for a dog is this.  Decide if you want a mixed breed.  There are many advantages to owning a mixed breed.  For one thing it was how nature intended things. Many dogs in a local animal shelter or humane society will be part poodle or part spaniel. That is because those are two extremely popular dog breeds.  Or if you want to be sure that a certain dog will have certain characteristics, invest in a registered purebred.  But don’t be fooled into getting a mixed breed at the cost of a registered purebred.
