Pekingese Dog
Pekingese:
The Pekingese, or Pekinese as it is sometimes called, is a small dog breed registered in many official kennel clubs including the AKC (American Kennel Club). The Pekingese is in the toy category.  It is a breed which is over 2000 years old and originates from China. Pekingese is associated with Chinese royalty, having originally been bred as companions for the Emperor of China. They have also been called Dogs of Fu or just Fu by the Chinese. This small dog breed would often be presented as a gift to the ladies of the Emperor.

Appearance:
The Pekingese is said to resemble a little lion and were therefore often called the “little lion dogs”. All colors are acceptable in this breed.  Sable red is the most common color and blonde is the most sought after color. They can also be tan, brown or black.  Adult Pekingese can weigh up to 14 pounds however they will often look as though they weigh much less.  That is because their hair hides their very muscular and compact bodies. Similar breeds will sometimes appear to be the same weight and to be of the same height but there is a huge difference when they are picked up because of the Peke’s musculature. It is a sturdy and strong breed under all that hair.

Personality:
The Pekingese is a stubborn, head-strong dog.  It does not take well to training.  Pekingese puppies do not like to be taught things or to be expected to obey commands. They can be rather independent and even ignore its owner when called.  Pekingese dogs carry themselves proudly and even have a look written on their faces which says, “You can’t tell me what to do.” They can be aggressive towards other dogs and are happiest in a home where they are the only dog.  Life in the palaces of China where they were highly regarded and respected probably suited their personality very much.  Living with a family of four children, one other dog and two cats would not be as thrilling to them. Pekingese can be difficult to control which would not make them suitable to a first time dog owner.  Like the other small breeds in the toy category, they can also be jealous of children.  Pekingese puppies are not suitable dogs for a young child.

Grooming:
The Pekingese need frequent grooming.  It should be brushed daily to keep its coat free of knots. It is not an easy dog to groom and is best groomed by a professional groomer. Pekingese dogs should see a groomer every 4 to 6 weeks.  This can make the Pekingese an expensive dog to own and a time-consuming pet to care for.

A High Maintenance Pooch:
Although the Pekingese enjoys a colorful history and reputation, much thought should go into the decision about whether this is the right dog for someone.  Ideally, its owner would have experience with dogs, especially dogs of the toy group, and have experience training stubborn dogs.  The ideal owner of a Pekingese would have time to dedicate to the daily grooming of this delicate animal and enough funds to provide professional grooming on a regular basis.
