Yorkshire Terriers
Yorkshire Terriers:

Yorkshire Terriers also known as “Yorkies” and are a small breed of purebred dog registered in the toy group of official kennel clubs such as the American Kennel Club. Yorkies originate from the terrier breeds that were originally bred as hunting dogs.

Appearance of the Yorkshire Terrier:
Yorkshire Terriers are very small and compact dogs. Yorkies can not weigh more than 7 pounds. They carry themselves in a light and joyful manner and appear curious and full of spirit. Their walk which has a bit of a bounce exudes confidence and personality. Yorkshire Terriers are a steel blue and brown color. There can be no variations in the color according to the breed standards of the kennel clubs. Their hair is very straight and waviness is not permissible. Their hair parts down the middle. They do not have an undercoat and their hair is very soft, silky, and fine. This causes them to be a good breed for allergy sufferers. This strikingly beautiful coat also causes them to be very high maintenance. Yorkshire Terriers striking coloring and magnificent coat gives them a very unique appearance.

Yorkie Personality:
Like the other toy breeds that have terrier and hunting backgrounds, Yorkies can be a very tenacious and stubborn dog.  They are not easy to train and they will not be distracted if they are busy with a task.  The task which they have chosen could be trying to find where a smell is coming from.  Yorkshire Terriers can keep to the task at hand for hours literally. Again, like other terriers, the Yorkshire Terrier does not know its own size.  It can be fierce and will have no qualms taking on a much bigger animal if it feels threatened or has been angered. The Yorkshire Terrier needs a lot of love and attention.  They like companionship but prefer the companionship of adults.  They are not recommended for children as they are territorial and will bite if their territory is invaded.  They would not hesitate to give a small child a serious bite if it wandered into what it sees as its own territory, like the area around its food dish. It could be so stressful to keep young children from doing things that will upset the dog that it is just easier not to introduce them into a family until the children are much older. Like its terrier relatives the Yorkshire Terrier is not an easy dog to train. It is stubborn and often called pig-headed. This pig-headedness may be a useful trait when going after a rodent but it is not an easy trait to live with. A Yorkie can definitely be a challenge.

Other Points to Consider:
The Yorkshire Terrier may have evolved from a hunting terrier but its coat today would not make it a practical choice in the fields.  They have a very difficult coat to maintain.  It knots easily and the silkiness would pick up burrs and thistles. It looks best when it is brushed one hour per day.  This makes it an interesting pet for dog breeders and dog show enthusiasts, but not the outdoor set. The Yorkshire Terriers popularity lies with its unique features and that is what makes it an expensive breed to purchase.
